Victims of polio
Polio is a virus that, thanks to an effective vaccination programme, has been completely wiped out in Denmark.
Today, 7000-8000 people, nationwide, live with a permanent disability as a consequence of polio. Many of these people suffer from Post Polio Syndrome. This means that they sustain fresh outbreaks of muscle debilitation and loss of function that exacerbates an already permanent disability.
A need exists to develop special services for and to conduct research on behalf of polio victims. PTU is involved in both areas. It offers therapy and treatment at the PTU Clinic and grants funds to research in the field.
